1. A Box at the Door

Ben moved to the town two weeks ago. On Saturday, he stood outside the community hall with a small wooden box under his arm. Music came from an open window, but it did not come from his box. His sister's old music box was silent. He read the sign beside the door: Saturday Repair Club.

Through the window, he saw people sitting around tables. Some carried old chairs. One woman held a bag with a broken handle. Ben almost turned back. He did not know anyone, and his box seemed too small to matter. Then a woman in an orange apron opened the door. "Come in. I am Rosa," she said.

"I only need a screwdriver," Ben told her. Rosa brought him to a table with a lamp and several empty trays. "Let us look together," she said. Ben put the box on a cloth. When he opened it, a little metal cylinder shone inside. He turned the key once, but the cylinder did not move.

Ben explained that his sister had given him the box before he moved. It played a tune they both remembered from childhood. He had taken a photograph of the inside at home because he wanted to understand it. "May I examine it?" Rosa asked. Ben nodded and moved his chair closer to the table.

2. The Photograph

Rosa found a diagram in a folder. Ben liked its clear lines and numbers. He pointed to a part near the key. "Is that the problem?" Rosa compared the drawing with the box. "This picture is for a different model," she said. "The key is on the other side. We need to look at your box carefully."

With Ben's permission, Rosa removed a loose screw from a small metal support. She placed it in the tray marked with his name. While she turned to get her glasses, Ben moved the tray to make space for the diagram. One screw rolled into the tray beside it. There were three similar screws there already.

Ben's face grew hot. For a moment, he wanted to say nothing. Then he showed Rosa the trays. "I moved it without looking," he said. Rosa stopped working. They did not try random screws in the box. Ben opened the photograph on his phone and enlarged the corner with the metal support.

The picture showed the screw's wide, flat head beside the ruler Ben had used at home. Rosa compared it with the screws in the tray and found the right one. She put it back in Ben's tray. Then she checked the support. It was loose, so the cylinder sat at an angle. A small washer was missing beneath the screw.

3. The Right Question

Rosa checked the box's other supports and measured the space. She wrote the washer's width and thickness on a card. The club did not have that size. A hardware shop was open nearby. "Could you ask there?" she said. Ben looked at the numbers. He was not sure he could explain the problem to a stranger.

"What if I ask for the wrong thing?" he said. Rosa drew a simple picture beside the measurements. "Take this card. You can also show the photograph. If something is unclear, ask the person to explain." Ben put the card in his coat pocket. Rosa stayed to help another visitor while he walked to the shop.

At the counter, Ben asked for a washer and handed over the card. The shopkeeper found one with the right width. Ben compared its thickness with Rosa's number. It was thicker than the size on the card. He took a breath. "Do you have a thinner one?" he asked. "This one needs to fit a very small space."

The shopkeeper checked another drawer and measured the new piece before giving it to him. Ben bought two, so the club could keep a spare. On the way back, he stopped outside a bakery. Usually he pointed at the bread he wanted. Today, he asked which loaf had seeds. He left with a loaf and the two tiny washers.

4. A Familiar Sound

Back at the club, Ben put his purchases on the cloth. Rosa checked the washer against her measurements. It fitted. She held the support in place while Ben used the small screwdriver under her guidance. They worked slowly. When he wanted to hurry, she asked him to stop and check that the screw was sitting straight.

Rosa checked the mechanism and invited him to turn the key gently. This time the cylinder began to move. A quiet tune came from the box. Ben held his breath through the first few notes. Near the end, one note sounded a little strange. He laughed. "It always does that," he said. "My sister calls it the box's own voice."

"The support is secure now," Rosa said. "That old note is a different matter. We do not need to change everything today." Ben listened again. He liked the familiar sound, and he did not want Rosa to replace working parts just to make it perfect. He closed the lid when the tune ended and thanked her for the help.

Before leaving, Ben shared the bread with the volunteers. Rosa asked whether he would like to return the following Saturday. "I cannot repair things on my own yet," he said. "You do not have to," she replied. "We also need someone to welcome visitors and write names on the trays." Ben wrote the date in his phone.

That evening, Ben called his sister and held the phone beside the open box. She recognised the tune at once. When the strange note came, they both laughed. He told her about Rosa, the photograph and his trip to the shop. His sister asked about the town, and this time he had more than street names to tell her.

The next Saturday, he arrived early. A woman waited outside with a torn shopping bag. Ben recognised the way she held it close and looked through the window. He opened the door for her. "Come in," he said. "I am Ben. Let us find you a place." On Rosa's table, two clean trays were already waiting.
