1. A Seed and a Pot

I have a small brown seed in my hand. My mother gives it to me. It is a bean seed. A bean seed can grow into a plant. I want to see it grow. First, I need a pot and some soil.

We find a little pot near the back door. It is empty. There is a small hole in the bottom. My mother puts a plate under the pot. Water can leave the pot through the hole. The plate can catch that water.

I put some soil in the pot. The soil is dark brown. I make a small hole in the soil with my finger. I put the seed in the hole. Then I put a little more soil over the seed.

I give the soil some water. I pour slowly from a small cup. The soil is wet now. I put the cup down. My mother and I carry the pot to a bright window. I wash the soil from my hands.

2. A Quiet Window

The next morning, I look at my pot. I can see the brown soil. I cannot see a plant yet. I want to look under the soil. My mother asks me to leave the seed there. It needs time to grow.

I make a picture of the pot on a piece of paper. I draw the window behind it. I put a little sun above the window. My picture has no green plant yet. I want to draw what I can really see.

On the third day, the pot still looks quiet. The top of the soil is a little dry. My mother checks the soil with me. We add a little water. We do not fill the pot with water. The seed stays under the soil.

I put my picture next to the pot. Every morning, I look at both of them. There is light at the window during the day. At night, the room is dark. I leave the pot in the same bright place.

3. Something Green

One morning, I see something new. A tiny green shoot is above the soil. It is not very tall. I call my mother to the window. We look closely without touching it. The small seed is growing into a plant.

I want to make a new picture of the plant. I put clean paper beside the pot. I put a green pencil beside the paper. I want to draw leaves too. My little plant has no leaves yet. I can wait a few more days.

Over the next few days, the little plant grows taller. Two small leaves open. The leaves are green and soft. I can see one leaf on each side. I count them with my mother. One leaf, two leaves.

The leaves lean towards the window. There is more light on that side. My mother turns the pot a little. We check the soil again. The soil is still wet, so we do not add more water today. I put the cup away.

4. A New Picture

After more days, the plant has another leaf. The first leaves are bigger too. I can see a new leaf at the top. It is very small. I look at it each morning. I do not pull it open with my fingers.

I make a second picture on clean paper. This picture has a taller plant. I draw the leaves carefully. I use brown for the pot and soil. I use green for the plant. The old picture stays next to the new one.

My mother looks at both pictures with me. The first picture shows only soil in a pot. The second picture shows a green plant. We can see the change on the paper. The change is slow, but it is easy to see now.

The plant stays by the bright window. It still needs light, water and time. It has no beans to eat yet. I put my green pencil beside the pictures. There is space for another picture when the plant is bigger.
