1. A Short List

I am in the kitchen with my mother. It is early, and we want breakfast. There are two eggs on the table. There is some bread too, but it is old and hard. There is no milk in the fridge.

My mother writes a short list. The list says bread, milk and two apples. I read each word. I want to buy these things. I know the small shop near our home. It has food at the front and a cold fridge at the back.

We look at the money on the table. There are six coins. Each coin is worth one pound. The bread costs two pounds. The milk costs two pounds too. Each apple costs one pound. We have enough money.

I take a clean bag from a chair. I put the money in my pocket. I put the list in the bag. My mother stays at home with the eggs. I put on my shoes and walk to the shop.

2. In the Shop

The shop door is open. A woman is near the counter. I say good morning to her. She says good morning too. I open my bag and take out the list. I want to buy the bread first.

There is fresh bread on a low shelf. I can see big loaves and small loaves. I want one small loaf. Its price is two pounds. I put one loaf in my bag. It smells good, but I do not eat it.

Next, I look for the apples. They are in a box near the bread. Some apples are green. Some are red. I want to buy two red apples. I count them before I put them in my bag. One apple, two apples.

Now I need milk. I look on the shelf near the bread. There is no milk there. I look near the apples. There is no milk there either. I read my list again. The last thing I need is milk.

3. A Simple Question

I go to the woman at the counter. I ask where the milk is. She points to the back of the shop. I can see the fridge now. The milk is inside it. I walk to the fridge and open its door.

The milk is cold. I take one carton and close the fridge. I hold the carton with two hands. Then I put it in my bag. I put it beside the bread. I do not put it on the soft bread.

I take my bag to the counter. I put the food on it. The woman counts the apples. There are two. She looks at the bread and milk too. The food costs six pounds. I take the six coins from my pocket.

I count the money in two small groups. Four coins are in one group. Two coins are in the other group. Four and two make six. I give the woman the money. She gives me a receipt, and I say thank you.

4. Breakfast at Home

I carry the bag home. My mother opens the door for me. I put the bag on the kitchen table. We take out the food together. There is one loaf of bread, one carton of milk and two red apples.

My mother puts the milk in the fridge. I wash the two apples with clean water. I put one apple on her plate. I put one on my plate. The apples are wet, so I dry them with a clean cloth.

My mother cooks the two eggs. I cut some fresh bread. We have one egg each. We sit at the table with our food. My mother pours a little milk into her tea. I drink some cold milk from a cup.

The bag is empty now. I fold it and put it on the chair. The list is still on the table. I read its three lines again. Bread, milk and two apples. Now all that food is here at home.
